Congress office notice: India’s main opposition party, the Congress Party, is facing the challenge of vacating its long-standing and historic office at 24 Akbar Road. The party has received a notice to vacate both 24 Akbar Road and the 5 Raisina Road complex. According to party sources, the deadline for vacating these premises has been set for March 28th. Consequently, the Congress is seriously considering possible legal, political, and administrative options. It is also preparing to request additional time from the government to find a workable solution. There is also discussion about bringing senior leaders like Ashok Gehlot or Digvijay Singh to Parliament through the Rajya Sabha, which could pave the way for the allocation of large government bungalows in their names.
24 Akbar Road has a deep connection with the Congress.
24 Akbar Road is not just a building, but a significant symbol of the Congress party’s political legacy. Since Indira Gandhi’s era, this address has been a central hub for the party’s political activities. Many major decisions, strategic meetings, and historic political events have been associated with this complex. For a long time, the alignment between 10 Janpath and 24 Akbar Road was considered a crucial part of the Congress’s central power structure. Due to their proximity to each other, the two locations served as the hubs of the party’s top leadership and organizational activities.
Indira Gandhi subsequently operated
The history of the Congress headquarters is also quite interesting. Before independence, Motilal Nehru’s Anand Bhavan in Allahabad was considered the primary center of party activities. After independence, the Congress central office was established in New Delhi. Following the split in the Congress in 1969, the party office’s location also changed. At that time, the Indira Gandhi faction lost control of the old office at 7, Jantar Mantar. Indira Gandhi subsequently operated a temporary office from the residence of senior Congress leader M.V. Krishnappa in Windsor Place. Later, in 1971, the party office moved to 5, Rajendra Prasad Road, and then to 24, Akbar Road in 1978. Since then, this address has become the permanent center of Congress national politics.

Congress has also inaugurated its new headquarters, ‘Indira Bhavan’. In January 2025, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi inaugurated the new headquarters in New Delhi. Several senior party leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and K.C. Venugopal, were present. At the inauguration ceremony, Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the new headquarters was built on the foundation of values such as democracy, nationalism, secularism, inclusive development, and social justice. Rahul Gandhi described it as a symbol of the Congress’s ideological tradition and the ideals of the party’s stalwart leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and Jawaharlal Nehru
