Kampala, Uganda – The recruitment process for the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) has sparked controversy, with insiders alleging irregularities and bias in the selection of candidates.
The position, which seeks to replace the outgoing CEO, Lily Ajarova, was advertised with specific academic and professional qualifications.
However, multiple sources within UTB claim that the shortlisted candidates do not meet the stipulated criteria, raising concerns about fairness and transparency.
Questionable Shortlisting Process
According to the job advertisement, UTB sought applicants with a degree in business-related fields such as Tourism, Business Administration, Economics, or Public Policy, as well as at least seven years of experience in tourism promotion, marketing, or management.
However, critics argue that several shortlisted candidates lack both the relevant academic background and industry experience.
Among the shortlisted candidates:
• Peter B. Muramira – A banker with a history at Citibank but no extensive experience in tourism promotion.
• Chemonges Mongea Sabila – A lawyer serving as the head of legal at Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), yet lacking expertise in tourism promotion or business management
• Grace Nshemere Makuba Gwaku – Holds a first degree in Food Science, which does not align with the job requirements.
