WASHINGTON : In a historic breakthrough during the midterm elections, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won a fiercely contested U.S. Senate seat in Michigan, defeating Republican Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim U.S. Senator in American history.

The 42-year-old physician, Rhodes Scholar, and former Detroit Health Director ran on a robust progressive platform advocating for “Medicare for All,” lower living costs for working-class families, and reduced corporate influence in politics. A prominent voice on foreign policy, he has also been an outspoken advocate for humanitarian concerns in the Middle East.

Addressing supporters in Detroit after his victory, El-Sayed responded to years of intense political friction and attacks from Donald Trump with confident wit, noting that while opponents may have struggled with his name in the past, they can simply address him as “Senator” when he takes office in January 2027. His historic win highlights the growing influence of progressive grassroots organizing in critical Midwestern battlegrounds.
