Indian Railways : In a major decision for rail passengers, the Indian Railways has announced a lifetime free travel facility for a specific category of people. Under this decision, soldiers who have received gallantry awards and their families are now fully waived train fares.

According to government directives, Army, Navy, and Air Force personnel who have received gallantry awards will now be granted lifetime train fare-free travel. Furthermore, this exemption is not limited to general or sleeper class, but also applies to AC coaches such as( Indian Railways) Second AC, AC Chair Car, and First Class.

The awardees’ wives or widows will also benefit from this scheme. Significantly, a companion is also permitted to travel with them free of charge during the journey. This move is being seen as a mark of respect and gratitude for the country’s brave soldiers and their contributions. The Ministry of Defense shared information about this decision, clarifying that this facility will be applicable nationwide and that eligible individuals will receive its benefits immediately.

On the other hand, the Railways already offers fare concessions to several categories of passengers. Persons with disabilities, those suffering from serious illnesses such as cancer, kidney disease, heart disease, thalassemia, and students receive concessions ranging from 50% to 75% in different categories. However, the concessions given to senior citizens were discontinued during the COVID period and have not been reinstated. This new decision by the Railways not only honors the soldiers but also sets an example of social responsibility and sensitivity.
